System layers
Rainwater harvesting stores collected roof water for a defined non-potable use. Stormwater detention temporarily holds runoff and releases it at a controlled rate. Infiltration allows suitable water to enter the surrounding ground. A project may combine these aims, but each one changes the tank, liner, outlet and maintenance design.
For reuse, the working volume must cycle often enough to be useful. For detention, the engineer checks inflow, allowable discharge and available drawdown time. Infiltration also requires suitable soil, groundwater separation and authority acceptance.
Start with the connected catchment, design rainfall, target working or detention volume, available footprint and proposed end use. The civil layout should show inlet and overflow levels, burial depth, loading, groundwater information and access chambers.
