Roof landscape build-ups

Green Roof Systems and Roof Gardens in Malaysia

A green roof is a coordinated build-up above the waterproofed roof, not a single product. We help project teams select drainage, water retention and filter layers around the planting design, loading limits and maintenance plan.

For architects, landscape consultants, contractors and building owners comparing green roof systems, build-ups and suitable Elmich components for Malaysian projects.

Option 01

Waterproofing and protection

The root-side build-up starts only after the roof membrane, falls and outlets are complete and protected.

  • Extensive or intensive?
  • Drain or retain?
  • How will it be maintained?
Option 02

Drainage or retention layer

Selected to move excess stormwater while retaining the amount of water required by the planting strategy.

Coordinate Every Layer

Green roofs and roof gardens solve different briefs

A lightweight extensive green roof usually uses shallow growing media and lower-maintenance planting. A roof garden or intensive green roof may include deeper planting, paths, seating and larger shrubs. These additional uses increase saturated weight, irrigation demand and maintenance access requirements.

The drainage layer should be selected after the planting depth, hardscape zones and structural allowance are known. VersiDrain may suit planted zones that need defined retention, while VersiCell can provide a free-draining void in suitable sections.

Design for Malaysian rainfall and maintenance

Intense rainfall makes outlet capacity, overflow routes and inspection access especially important. Filter fabric must prevent growing-media fines from entering the drainage layer without restricting flow, and removable inspection zones should remain clear around outlets.

Planting and irrigation should also account for exposed roof heat, wind and dry periods. The maintenance plan needs to state how outlets, vegetation, irrigation and edge details will be inspected after handover.

Green Roof Systems and Roof Gardens in Malaysia build-up
  1. Waterproofing and protection: The root-side build-up starts only after the roof membrane, falls and outlets are complete and protected.
  2. Drainage or retention layer: Selected to move excess stormwater while retaining the amount of water required by the planting strategy.
  3. Filter geotextile: Separates planting media from the drainage layer and reduces migration of fines.
  4. Growing media and planting: Depth and composition depend on plant type, wind, irrigation and the allowable saturated load.

Questions That Change the Design

Extensive or intensive?

Extensive roofs use shallower, lower-maintenance planting. Intensive roofs support deeper soil and a wider planting range but add weight and upkeep.

Drain or retain?

The balance depends on rainfall discharge targets, irrigation, plant demand and the available structural capacity.

How will it be maintained?

Safe access, inspection zones around outlets and a practical irrigation plan should be detailed before construction.

Frequently asked questions

Before Product Selection

Which Elmich product is used for a green roof?

VersiDrain supports planted roof configurations, while VersiCell is used where a free-draining cell layer is required. The final selection follows the complete build-up.

Can the system sit directly over waterproofing?

Waterproofing, root management and protection must be agreed before the landscape layers are installed.

What should an initial review include?

Send the roof plan, section, planting type, media depth, outlets, design load and delivery location.
